I am honoured to be elected as President of the IHPE for the next two years and look forward to working with fellow Trustees and our wider membership. During this period I will be committed to following the lead of my predecessors in ensuring IHPE’s distinctive voice is heard widely, the activities and influence of the IHPE expand and membership continues to grow.
My own involvement in health promotion has been longstanding and varied.
My academic background was in psychology, sociology and education. I taught sciences and psychology in schools, community and higher education before taking a health education course in the late 1970s. I spent over 20 years at what is now Leeds Beckett University in the UK teaching on, and course leader of the postgraduate health promotion course and as Head of the Centre for Health Promotion Research. In the 1980s I was actively involved with health promoting school developments and later worked on a number of postgraduate health promotion course developments, both nationally and internationally. International work included development of the health promotion services in Tanzania, Sudan and the Eastern Mediterranean Region. My research activities have been broad and have included systematic reviewing of health promotion interventions, health promotion theory, mental health promotion and health inequalities. In recent years I have continued teaching in the UK as a visiting member of staff at various universities and been an honorary member of staff at the University of the Western Cape contributing to teaching and development of distance learning materials. My publications have included textbooks on health promotion and on mental health promotion. I have been a member of the Institute for many years and joined the Board 6 years ago.
