The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) are calling for a £20 million a year prevention programme. They launched report of their research at the House of Lords on November 23rd.
The nationwide prevention programme called for would relieve some pressure on A &E departments through preventing accidental injuries to under 5s.
RoSPA and RCEM report from their research that A&E departments receive a disproportionate number of unintentional injuries in 3 age groups – under 5s, 15 – 24 year olds, and the over 70s.
72% of injuries to the under 5s taking place in the home. RoSPA and RCEM recommend injury prevention programmes such as ROSPA’s Safe at Home which combines education for parents and professionals with safety equipment for families.
