2016 RoSPA Home Safety Congress: Diary date and call for papers

Taking the Rise out of Falls:  “New Approaches to Healthy Ageing”
November 15th, 2016 – Holiday Inn Birmingham Airport, Coventry Road, Birmingham, B26 3QW

Falls is the key issue affecting older people today. They not only have devastating consequences to the quality of life for those who
sufferthem but also lead to strains on the NHS, local authorities and social services. It is in everyone’s interest to consider effective
falls prevention techniques.

Falls prevention is about making sure that when people stand up, they stay up – and therefore reducing the rising number of people requiring
hospital attention as a result of a fall. In 2014-15, more than 282,000 people over the age of 65 were admitted as a result of a fall.
Over 70,000 hip fractures occur every year  – the leading cause of accident related mortality in older people. Falls can reduce the number of
disability-free life years. They also destroy confidence, which in turn can lead to loneliness, isolation or the loss of independence.

Greater emphasis on prevention is required. Rather than just joining up services for those who have experienced a fall, we also need to
strengthen the ethos of making every visit count towards reducing the risk of falling. RoSPA’s 2016 National Home Safety Congress, sponsored
by Micromarketing Limited, will consider new approaches and good practice in the safety of older people in the home environment, from core
principles of valuing quality of life to evaluating the effectiveness of strategies and programmes. The Congress will benefit anyone who
works with older people or who is involved in strategic planning for in injury prevention.

The Holiday Inn, is conveniently placed near the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport with excellent road and rail links and
airport connections.

This is an opportunity for public health and injury prevention practitioners to contribute and demonstrate the impact of innovative approaches.
