Use-by dates on food labels

The impact of use-by and sell-by dates on food purchasing and consumption as well as on food wastage has been recognised.

Food writer Joanna Blythman has asked who actually gains from such labels. While ignoring the use-by date on cooked meat products isn’t sensible it makes less sense to take them seriously, for example, on fruit which is still under-ripe and on vegetables which look fresh.
