About IHPE

IHPE is dedicated to improving standards as well as publicising Health Education and Promotion practice and theory. It’s impressive history spans over 60 years.

IHPE is a professional association offering a ‘home’ for anyone involved with health education and promotion. It offers a place to share expertise and experience with like-minded professionals.

We have links with other professional societies and institutes too, for example, we have reciprocal arrangements for members wishing to join the RSPH.

As well as publishing the highly regarded International Journal of Health Promotion and Education, the Institute of Health promotion and Education is also involved with:

  • Maintaining an accredited continuing professional development programme through conferences and webinars
  • Publishing evidence based position statement of current health topics
  • Encouraging, promoting, and disseminating research
    Providing advice on policy development
    Accrediting Centres of Expertise
  • Recognising distinguished contributions to health promotion and health education through awards and honours.

We, as an Institute, work to further the health education and promotion knowledge, expertise and practice of our members in a wide variety of specialisms. Members’ interests are varied and include:

  • public health
  • health protection and environmental health
  • nursing and midwifery
  • medicine and dentistry
  • psychiatry and psychology
  • health coaching and training
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • teaching
  • youth and community work
  • probation and prison services
  • inequalities

The work of the Institute’s work is led by the interests of the members and the list above is not exhaustive. The common theme that links everything we do is a strong belief in the value of health education and promotion. We aim to provide information, learning and networking opportunities and we welcome contributions or suggestions from members.

The Institute has achieved a recognised role in the field of prevention and management of illness and promotion of health. It has been in the forefront of developments, with special contributions to the settings approach. This has been reflected in recent publications that have dealt with:

  • health promoting settings
  • models of management
  • quality assessment and evaluation
