Raising the Profile of Mental Health

Raising the profile of Mental Health

We welcome the appointment early in November of the first shadow Minister for Mental Health in the UK. Appointed by Jeremy Corbyn, Luciana Berger has immediately spoken out about the importance of mental health achieving equal status with physical health in NHS spending. It is also good to see that she recognises the importance of prevention.

She has been critical of the Government’s record on young people’s mental health. If mental health generally has been traditionally treated as a second class to physical health the child and adolescent mental health services are ‘a Cinderella service within a Cinderella service’. She has already been asking a lot of questions and been working to see that mental health is raised in both oral and written questions in Parliament.
